Dean Hochman’s artistic rebirth began when he put down his paint brush and picked up his camera.

A classically trained acrylic artist, Hochman used to share the conceit that painting is the superior form of art making — but now views it as an exhausted medium. Photography offers him untapped creative possibilities to explore.

From coat hangers to rubber bands, Hochman’s portfolio showcases a particular fascination with everyday, often mass-produced objects that he uses to express his own unique sensibility. Whether set in the aisle of a grocery store or his studio’s bathroom, his images reveal a beauty and wonder in the most overlooked places and can appear meditative, humorous and even transformative. His pieces combine contemporary abstraction, minimalism, and realism — often leveraging vivid fluorescent and ultraviolet light. He experiments with paper and plastic geometric shapes, creating sharply contrasting shadows, reflections, and textures.

Hochman’s dynamic work has garnered millions of views online. He is proud to graciously share a portion of his photos via Creative Commons. He was raised in St. Joseph, Missouri and resides in Kansas City. Hochman holds a BA in Art and served as a youth arts educator.
